Mentholis anaturally occurring organic compound that is a terpene alcohol with a strongminty, cooling odor and taste. It can be obtained from the oils of peppermint, corn mint, orother mints, or it can be made synthetically. At room temperature, menthol is a clear or white, waxy, crystallinesubstance that is solid and melts slightly above.Menthol can be used to relieve itching, treatupper respiratory tract problems, and treat mild to moderate muscle and jointpain. It's also found in medications to relieve symptoms of asthma and rhinitis.Menthol is used in many products, including cigarettes, liqueurs, cough drops,mouthwashes, toothpastes, and shampoos. Menthol causes a coolingsensation when eaten or put on the skin. This cooling effect is linked to menthol's ability toactivate the TRPM8 ion channel.
